7th Witney Chess Congress (2 & 3 November 2019)

The Open section at last weekend’s Witney Congress was also the first leg of the 2019-20 Oxfordshire Individual Championship. The second and final leg is the Open section at Kidlington.

The outright winner of Witney’s Open section was Oxford University’s Filip Mihov, with 4.5/5, a point ahead of FM David Zakarian and Paul Girdlestone on 3.5/5.

Another Oxford University player, Otto Rasanen, was among those tied on 3 points, and Cumnor’s Nick Burrows and Nigel Moyse both scored 2.5 points, as did young Dimitrios Levon Zakarian.

Perhaps not all these players will enter Kidlington, and not all of them look likely at this stage to be eligible for the Oxfordshire Individual Championship (for eligibility criteria, see the relevant page under the ‘Kidlington 2020’ tab), but I hope the second leg will produce a hard-fought contest for the title, especially in the absence from Witney of Marcus Harvey, the current Oxfordshire Champion.
